As homeschool parents, we spend years carefully selecting curriculum, tracking credits, and preparing our teens for the world beyond graduation. We teach them what to believe through Bible studies and family devotions.
Unfortunately, the statistics for Christian youth entering adulthood are sobering. Landmark studies by the Barna Group and Lifeway Research reveal that nearly 2 out of 3 young adults (around 64%) who grew up in the church drop out of active faith during their twenties.
When researchers dig into why this mass exodus is happening, the answers are eye-opening. Intellectual skepticism, unaddressed doubts, and a feeling that they cannot safely ask tough cultural and scientific questions are at the top of the list. Our devotions and Bible studies meet our children’s needs as they grow and develop as children, but as youth transition into their teen and young adult years they need to learn how to face the rhetoric that will challenge their faith.
We want to change that statistic for our community. That is why we are thrilled to offer a high school Apologetics class (Grades 9–12) in our upcoming co-op schedule. Here is why your student needs to be in this class this year.
1. A Safe Space to Transform Doubt into Conviction
High school is a natural season for questioning. Teens are transitioning from the "borrowed faith" of their parents to a personal faith of their own. According to Lifeway Research, nearly 30% of young adults who left the faith cited unanswered doubts as a primary reason. Our co-op class provides a safe, guided space to ask those tough questions before they leave home. Using foundational texts like I Don't Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist and Rebecca McLaughlin’s Confronting Christianity, we will directly tackle the heavy objections our culture throws at them:
Does truth exist, and can we actually know it?
Hasn't science disproved God, or does the scientific evidence point directly to a Creator?
Doesn't Christianity crush diversity?
How can a loving God allow suffering or send people to hell?
Instead of suppressing these questions, we will answer them with rigorous logic, history, science, and Scripture.
2. Preparation for Culture Shock
Whether your teen goes to college or straight into the workforce, they will encounter worldviews that directly contradict Christianity.
Without a foundation in apologetics, that transition can be jarring. This class acts as a booster for their faith. By examining competing worldviews alongside their peers in the safety of our co-op, they learn to spot flaws in culture's logic before they are confronted by it in the real world. Their faith will transform to “just a feeling” to grounded knowledge that will help them stay rooted in their knowledge of Christ.
3. Critical Thinking, Logic, and Community
Apologetics is not about winning arguments; it is about clear, logical thinking. In this class, students will learn to analyze arguments, identify logical fallacies, and communicate with grace.
Best of all, they won't be doing it alone. Discussing these heavy topics with other homeschool teens builds deep community, showing them that it is completely normal—and incredibly rewarding—to love God with their minds. This class will help them expand their view of their faith from experiences like inspiring worship services and youth events to meaningful knowledge and discussion about their Creator and Author of their faith.
"But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear." — 1 Peter 3:15
